When is the right time to buy a used car?

There is no single calendar date that makes every used car good value. A suitable vehicle with documented condition can be a better decision than an unsuitable car advertised as a time-limited bargain.

Set the brief before watching prices

Write down your required seats, boot space, journey pattern, transmission and maximum overall budget. Separate essentials from preferences. Comparing vehicles with different engines, trim, mileage or history as if they were identical can make a headline discount misleading.

Compare like for like

Record the asking prices of genuinely comparable vehicles and the date you checked them. Include preparation, tyres, servicing due, insurance and collection costs in your comparison. An advertised price is not evidence of the eventual transaction price.

Allow time for the checks

Do not let the end of a month, a promotion or another alleged buyer replace due diligence. A useful buying window is one in which you can inspect the vehicle, understand the documents and organise payment without pressure. Get any offer and expiry conditions in writing.

For dealers replacing stock

Consider your stock mix, preparation capacity, holding costs and realistic exit options. A low purchase price is only one part of the decision. Set your buying limit before negotiating and do not rely on a guaranteed resale margin.
