Test the space you need
Check access, seating position, rear-seat space and the boot with your usual luggage or equipment in mind. If towing matters, verify the exact vehicle’s permitted weights and your licence requirements rather than assuming that a large SUV is suitable.
Ask what the service history contains
Distinguish a stamped book, itemised invoices and digital records. Check dates and mileages and ask about scheduled engine, transmission and four-wheel-drive maintenance for that model. Do not infer that every scheduled job has been completed from the words “service history” alone.
Inspect expensive components
Ask an appropriately qualified inspector to assess the vehicle and explain anything needing attention. Tyre sizes, brake condition, suspension, equipment and previous repairs can materially affect the ownership budget. Check that all advertised features operate during the viewing.
Mileage, budget and reliability
A lower odometer reading does not remove age-related wear or missing maintenance. Equally, higher mileage does not prove a vehicle is unsuitable. Compare evidence and condition, leave a repair reserve and obtain insurance quotes. We do not publish invented brand rankings or guarantee reliability from a mileage figure.
